Falling in love again.
Never wanted to.
What am I to do?
Can’t help it.

On Saturday I picked up a 50mm f/1.8 to use at a friend Mel’s birthday party. To say I’ve fallen in love with the images the lens helps produce is an understatement. The lens relit a spark and got me excited about portraits again in a way my 17-85mm never did. Combined with the 50D the images are so sharp you could cut yourself on them. It’s a lens that will have me thinking about depth of field a lot more, as wide open at f/1.8 it’s so thin that a head turned slightly sideways on will have one eye sharp the other going out of focus. If one person is standing slightly behind anther as in the shot below the lens will need stopping down.

Talking with a good friend and fellow photographer Paul on Sunday night we agreed that we’d both rather carry multiple bodies with primes than take the easy option and use zooms. I’ve got a Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L USM rental coming for my next wedding shoot with Marie and James in a few weeks. Both the 40D and 50D will be getting some use, time to invest in another Black Rapid R-Strap, better still the RS DR-2 Slim Double Strap.
